State seeks contractor for diesel power upgrades in four Y-K villages

The Alaska Department of Commerce is accepting bids through June 3 for a contractor to install new diesel generators and upgrade electrical systems in power plants serving Chuathbaluk, Crooked Creek, Sleetmute, and Stony River.

The project will replace aging equipment in existing diesel power plant modules in the four Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta communities. The contractor must furnish all labor, materials, equipment, and transportation required to complete the work. The state will provide the engine-generators.

Remote Alaska villages depend on diesel generators for electricity because they are not connected to the regional power grid. Alaska News previously reported that rural Alaska electricity costs run three to five times urban rates. The Lower Yukon-Kuskokwim Priority Climate Action Plan calls for diesel generation upgrades and electrical grid improvements to enhance energy efficiency in the region.

The four communities range from approximately 50 to 100 residents each.

The project work is divided into a base bid and additive alternates. Additive Alternate #1 covers ventilation equipment, including radiator dampers, intake dampers, and exhaust fan assemblies, along with removal and re-connection work. Additive Alternate #2 covers the demolition of old Generator #3 and installation of new Generator #3, including wiring, controls, breaker trip unit, CTs, conductors, and voltage regulator. Shop fabrication work for owner-furnished engine-generators is not part of this contract.
