State proposes to extend church lease at Bettles Airport for five years

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is accepting public comments through May 18 on a proposal to extend a land lease at Bettles Airport for Voice for Christ Ministries.

The lease covers approximately 23,100 square feet at Lot 6, Block 101, where the ministry operates a church, residential cabin and storage garage. The proposed extension would run five years at an annual rent of $1,617.

Under state law, the department can grant the extension without competitive bidding. Written comments must be received by 4:30 p.m. on May 18, 2026. The department will notify only those who submit written comments of its final decision.

Bettles is a community of about 12 people in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, roughly 35 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The airport serves as a gateway to Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve.
