State proposes expanding Klawock oyster farm lease by 6 acres

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments through May 14, 2026, on a proposal to expand an existing oyster farm lease in Klawock Inlet from 1 acre to 7 acres.

Shinaku Shellfish Company, LLC holds the current 10-year aquatic farm lease for commercial cultivation and harvest of Pacific oysters. The company has applied to add 6 acres to accommodate new floating bag oyster culture gear, grow-out longlines, and anchors. The amendment would also allow the company to replace existing wooden work rafts and floating support facilities with steel materials and reconfigure the layout of gear and infrastructure within the parcel.

The farm is located in Klawock Inlet near Klawock, specifically in the eastern half of Section 34 and the northwest quarter of Section 35, Township 72 South, Range 80 East, Copper River Meridian.

Written comments must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on May 14, 2026, to Jen Kopnicky via email at [email protected] or by mail to the Division of Mining, Land and Water, Southcentral Regional Land Office, 550 W. 7th Ave., Suite 900C, Anchorage, AK 99501-3577. Only those who submit written comments during this period will be eligible to appeal the department's final decision.
